Accessing Middle Eastern Markets Countries like Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are spending most of their record oil revenues on large infrastructure projects on their own soil. They are also spending record amounts on improving their "soft" infrastructure - their education, health, and public and private sector governance systems. The majority of the skills, material and labour needed to achieve these goals has to be imported. Australia is no longer an unknown quantity to Gulf nationals. Thousands of families from the Gulf holiday in Australia during the northern hemisphere summer (July/August). The Gold Coast is a favoured destination. Gulf airlines like Emirates and Etihad now fly to Australia frequently. There are substantial numbers of Australians living and working in the Gulf region and many well-known Australian companies operate there. Many business opportunities exist in the region for Australian companies. Accessing opportunities in the Middle East requires a sound business approach including an informed view of the potential risks and rewards. Success in the Middle East depends on good networks, strong relationships, long-term commitment, choosing the right clients and partners, and of course a good product. Kleinhardt has the knowledge, experience, expertise and networks to assist companies to evaluate and access the markets. Call Michael Otago 07 3221 1661 to arrange a consultation today.

Calm at Work Breeze through Your Day Feeling Calm, Relaxed and In Control by Paul Wilson Work can often be one of the most stressful situations in our lives. We have to work with people that we don't necessarily have anything in common with and perform boring and repetitive tasks. In the United States and other parts of the world, you are supposed to look busy at all times. This can add to the stress since you feel like you are being watched constantly. Calm at Work offers over 100 practical exercises and techniques to help you remain calm at work. Here are the main ideas offered in both Calm at Work, along with Wilson's condensed Little Book of Calm at Work. Key ideas Act calm - When you pretend you are calm, and adopt the characteristics of a calm person, you'll convince yourself you're calm in no time. Go bonsai - Sometimes, even the smallest glimpse of nature is all you need to escape the pressures of life. Add plants to your office and try to take your breaks in nature as often as possible. Carry a notebook - Write down your worries and watch them diminish. Have a half-hour worry session where you deal with all of the concerns in a concentrated and focused way. Worry when the time comes - Worry always relates to the future. So if you devote your full attention to what is going on now, not only will you feel calmer, but also the future will take care of itself.

Leadership - a much maligned word! By Cam Charlton Director, Kleinhardt Pty Ltd Business Consultants Much has been said about what makes a great leader and what is leadership, but little is really understood. Leadership is often confused with management. Even the Thesaurus puts both words together as synonyms (the Oxford Dictionary does not even define the word). But, there are many great managers who are bad leaders. There are great leaders who are bad managers and, of course, there are those special people who are both. Leadership is often confused with stridency, strength of character, height, and male. In fact, many world leaders are small - look at Hitler - and even others are small inspirational women such as - Mother Teresa, Aung San Suu Khi, Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher, , and Hillary Clinton to name a few. The list goes on forever.
So what do we mean by the word 'leadership'. Perhaps the best way to illustrate this is to use a local home grown example - Tom Hedley.
Tom started off as a local plumber in 1969. He loved his work because his customers appreciated him and his ability to turn up on time, charge fair price and do a good job. Tom has grown this business into the largest construction company in Far North Queensland. In addition he has not been afraid to take risks which allowed him to step into unfamiliar and diversified fields such as hotels, gaming, child care and of course his passion for horses. He has not achieved all this from having a high profile, being outspoken, or seeking the limelight. Quite the opposite, Tom is essentially a shy man. What Tom does have is a natural leadership quality.
